How Often Should You Wash Weatherboard in Wellington?

Most Wellington weatherboard homes need a soft wash every 12–18 months. North walls and anything under trees are often due every 12. Sheltered south walls can stretch to 18.

Coastal streets: Seatoun, Miramar, Petone and Titahi Bay pick up salt film as well as mould. Annual is typical on the harbour face.

Valley and bush suburbs: Ngaio, Crofton Downs, Tawa and Karori stay damp. Green streaks on the downhill wall are the usual sign you are overdue.

Why not wait until it looks bad: Mould holds moisture against the paint. Leaving it two or three years costs more in paint than in washing. Soft wash kills growth at the root without stripping the coating.

After a wash: Keep gutters clear. Overflowing spouting soaks the same wall you just cleaned.
